Reading Support Templates
When reading is hard, parents often need clear words for the next conversation. These templates help you ask for information, support, or an evaluation, in your own name and your child's corner.
1. Ask the teacher what they are seeing
Start here. It opens the conversation without putting anyone on the defensive.
Subject: Question about reading progress
Hi [Teacher Name], I am checking in about [Child First Name]'s reading. At home, I am noticing [brief concern: guessing, avoiding reading, trouble sounding out words, slow reading, spelling difficulty, fatigue]. Could you let me know what you are seeing in class? I would also appreciate any recent reading data, intervention notes, or examples of skills that seem strong or difficult right now. Thank you, [Parent Name]
2. Request a school evaluation conversation
When concerns persist, you can ask the school to consider a formal evaluation. You do not need a diagnosis in hand to ask.
Subject: Request to discuss reading evaluation
Hi [School Contact], I am concerned about [Child First Name]'s reading development and would like to discuss whether a school evaluation is appropriate. At home, I am noticing [brief concerns]. I would like the school team to consider areas such as decoding, phonological processing, word reading, spelling, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Please let me know the next step for making this request formally and receiving any required consent forms or procedural information. Thank you, [Parent Name]
3. Share an A New Page progress report

Subject: Reading practice update from home
Hi [Teacher/Specialist Name], I wanted to share a home reading-practice update from A New Page. The report shows the skills we have been practicing, recent accuracy patterns, and any repeated trouble spots. This is not a diagnosis or school evaluation. I am sharing it as additional home information that may help us coordinate support for [Child First Name]. Thank you, [Parent Name]
